How long is it permissible for me to travel during pregnancy?

If your pregnancy is uncomplicated, you may travel until your 36th week. However, if you have problems that would classify you and your baby at risk, you will need to consult your physician for guidelines of travel.

Is it permissible to exercise during pregnancy?

If you have an exercise program prior to pregnancy, it is perfectly acceptable to continue during pregnancy, as long as you have no problems with the pregnancy. You may even begin an exercise program during pregnancy, as long as it is safe, low impact and geared to your activity tolerance. Woman's Hospital's Fitness Center offers many exercise classes designed especially for pregnancy. You may want to log on to womans.org for further information.

I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and have extreme nausea and weakness. Why?

When hormone changes occur early in pregnancy, many women experience nausea and weakness. Nausea frequently makes the appetite decrease. However, an empty stomach will only increase the nausea. It is important to eat many small meals during the day - most women find keeping saltines or other crackers on hand to be helpful when nausea occurs. Also, it is important to maintain hydration by drinking 2-3 quarts of fluids each day. Keeping a quart container filled with fluid and drinking small quantities frequently will make it easier to maintain hydration. Even if you cannot eat, it is of utmost importance that you remain hydrated.

May I color or perm my hair during pregnancy?

Most of our physicians would rather you avoid these types of exposure to chemicals, if possible, during pregnancy. You may want to consult your physician at one of your routine OB office visits.
